Toll Rates in Europe for 2024
All the significant changes in toll rates through the different countries in Europe in 2024
The main reasons for changes in tolling
Toll rate changes in Europe are typically driven by a combination of factors aimed at ensuring the efficient operation, maintenance, and financing of road infrastructure while addressing broader transportation goals and societal needs.
Some of the main reasons are:
1. Environmental: Introduction of CO2 emissions class
In order to reach the climate improvement goals of reducing CO2 emissions, the European Commission amended the Eurovignette Directive (EU Directive 2022/362)
They impose pricing according to:
- The CO2 emission class
- The technically permissible max. weight F1
The CO2 law changed the tolling system rates for a lot of countries, such as Germany, Hungary, and Austria.
Hungary added a new scheme of penalty amount and added the J5 category, while Austria established a new procedure for vehicles with incorrect CO2 data registered.
2. Regulatory and economic: Creating notification and maximum toll rates
Such as for example in Bulgaria, where the violation notifications and the Maximum toll option, changed the toll rates
- Road users can now pay a reduced fee called “Maximum toll” for violations detected from 1st, January 2024
- They have 14 days to pay after receiving the email notification
